When Depression Feels Like Nothing at All

Depression is often misunderstood as constant sadness, but for many people it feels more like numbness — a flat, grey absence of feeling where motivation, interest, and energy simply disappear. You might go through the motions of your day without registering any of it. Tasks that used to be easy feel impossibly heavy. You may withdraw from people not because you dislike them but because you cannot summon the energy to engage. If this sounds familiar, know that you are not lazy, broken, or making it up. Depression is a medical condition that affects brain chemistry, sleep, appetite, and cognition. Small steps matter: getting out of bed, showering, eating something, stepping outside for even five minutes. Tell one person how you are feeling. Contact a mental health professional — therapy, medication, or a combination can make a real difference. Recovery is possible, and you do not have to figure it out alone.
